Ana Paula Macedo is the new president of the UMinho School of Nursing Back

Professor Ana Paula Macedo was sworn as president of the University of Minho’s School of Nursing on October 19th. The rector António M. Cunha took part in the ceremony, at the School’s auditorium in the Gualtar campus in Braga. The new president counts with Goreti Mendes, João Cainé and Simão Vilaça as vice-presidents for the 2017/2020 triennium.

Ana Paula Macedo has a degree in Medical and Surgical Nursing from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa [Portuguese Catholic University], a PhD in Education with a specialisation in Organisational Knowledge and School Administration from UMinho, and a post-doctorate in Nursing from the University of São Paulo (Brazil), with the research project “Modelos de gestão e práticas profissionais de educação e formação dos enfermeiros em uma unidade de cuidados intensivos do Brasil” [“Management models and nursing education and training professional practices at an intensive care unit in Brazil”].

She has been a professor at the School of Nursing for 20 years and has coordinated several courses, post-graduations and research projects. In 2015, she won the Droesbeke Caring Award from the International Association of Human Caring with the research work “Dimensões do Cuidar na Organização Hospitalar: a Perspetiva dos Enfermeiros”, in partnership with the Braga Hospital. She is a member of the Sociedade Portuguesa das Ciências da Educação [Portuguese Society of Education Sciences] and of the Fórum Português de Administração Educacional [Portuguese Forum for Educational Administration]. She has authored over half a hundred scientific papers, seven book chapters and the book “Supervisão em Enfermagem: Construir as Interfaces entre a Escola e o Hospital”.

About the University of Minho’s School of Nursing

The UMinho’s School of Nursing is considered a reference in nursing education, with awards from the Ibero-American Council in Honour of Educational Quality, the ODAEE (Organización de las Américas para la Excelencia Educativa) and the Municipality of Braga. The school currently has 437 students and 44 lectures and researchers.

The school was created in 1912 as a polytechnic unit under the supervision of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Braga. Known at the time as the São Marcos Hospital’s Nursing School, it changed its name to Calouste Gulbenkian Braga School of Nursing and was integrated into UMinho in 2004. The school offers a bachelor in Nursing, a programme that has the highest admission mark in the country, as well as master’s degrees, post-graduations, post-bachelor’s and short-term training programmes.

The School’s teaching is based on “high requirements, high quality and precision” and “on promoting the students’ scientific, technical, cultural and ethical development”.
